Medicinal value of Chandrashoor:

  • Fracture healing activity: The  phytochemical  study  of  the  ethanolic    revealed presence  of  glycoside,  alkaloids,  tannin  (Phenolic  compound),  Flavonoids,  and  amino  acids  like  glutamine,  cysteine,  and  glycine. Hence  fracture  healing  activity  of  Lepidium sativum  seeds  were possible by one or more of these constituents, such as fatty acids, (17) protein (18),  or  through  their  activities (19) as  well  as  possible incorporation in the biological activities similar to the stable isotope tracers. (20).  The X?ray photographs taken  at  2nd,  4th  and 8th week demonstrated a continuous  significant increase  in  callus  formation  in  test  group when  compared  to  control  group.  Finally, the full recovery in test group was obtained in the 8th week. This result of  calcification  may  be  due  to  ethanolic  extract  of Lepidium sativum (ELS)  acting  as  antinflammatory  agent  and  may produce  collagen.  The present study data revealed that ethanolic extract of Lepidium sativum L. seeds may contribute to significant fracture healing activity

  • Beneficial in Asthma: The investigation was carried out to determine the efficacy and safety of L. sativum in patients of bronchial asthma. The respiratory functions (FVC, FEV1, FEF25-75% and MVV) were assessed using a spirometer prior to and after 4 weeks of treatment. Efficacy of the drug in improving clinical symptoms and severity of asthmatic attacks was evaluated by interviewing the patient and by physical and haematological examination at the end of the treatment. 4 weeks treatment with the drug showed statistically significant improvement in various parameters of pulmonary functions in asthmatic subjects. Also significant improvement was observed in clinical symptoms and severity of asthmatic attacks. None of the patient showed any adverse effect with L. sativum. The results of the present study suggest the usefulness of L. sativum seeds in patients with bronchial asthma.

  • Sedation effect: The present study deals with the investigation of the neurobehavioral effects of the total alkaloid from seeds of Lepidium sativum [LSAF].The effect of LSAF on general pharmacology, thiopental induced hypnosis, locomotor activity, motor coordination, antianxiety and analgesic effect were studied. The animals were intraperitonealy treated with 50, 150 and 250 mg/kg LSAF to the respective treatment groups. The results revealed that LSAF considerably potentiated the thiopental induced hypnosis, decreased locomotor activity and motor coordination, and increased preference to plus maze open arm. LSAF also increase the reaction time in caudal immersion and decrease in number of wriths in acetic acid induced writhing. It has been concluded that LSAF exhibited sedative, anxiolytic, myorelaxant and analgesic activity.

  • Anti Diarrhoeal activity: This study was aimed to provide the pharmacological basis for the medicinal use of Lepidium sativum in diarrhea using in vivo and in vitro assays. The seed extract of Lepidium sativum (Ls.Cr) at 100 and 300?mg/kg inhibited castor oil-induced diarrhea in rats. It suggests that Lepidium sativum seed extract possesses antidiarrheal and spasmolytic activities mediated possibly through dual blockade of muscarinic receptors and Ca++ channels, though additional mechanism(s) cannot be ruled out and this study explains its medicinal use in diarrhea and abdominal cramps.
