Chemical composition of Dalchini Powder:

The primary constituents of the essential oil are 65% to 80% cinnamaldehyde and lesser percentages of other phenols and terpenes, including eugenol, trans-cinnamic acid, hydroxycinnamaldehyde, o-methoxycinnamaldehyde, cinnamyl alcohol and its acetate, limonene, alpha-terpineol, tannins, mucilage, oligomeric procyanidins, and trace amounts of coumarin.

Effect of Dalchini Powder on Tridoshas:

Cinnamon Powder pacifies Kapha and Vata Doshas but aggravates the Pitta Dosha; it can be used in conditions where there is aggravation of Kapha and Vata Dosha and Pitta activities are diminished.

Home Remedial Uses of Dalchini Powder in Ayurveda:

  • Kandu Nashanam: Kandu means the itching sensation. As per Ayurveda, itching happens when there are some toxins in the bloods and the layers of skin. These toxins cause irritation to the nerve ending lying in nearby area. Cinnamon Powder helps removing these toxins from the body thus it is one of the best home remedy for itching.
  • Aam Aruchi Nashanam: Aama is a semi digested poisonous byproduct produced in body when metabolism is disturbed. Ayurveda strongly believes that; this Aama is the root cause of most of the metabolic disorders. Cinnamon Powder digests Aama and alleviates anorexia; thus it is a dietary supplement for detoxification.
  • Hrudya rogajit: Cinnamon Powder nourishes the cardiac muscles; a good dietary supplement for healthy heart.
  • Basti Rogajit: In Ayurveda; Basti means the urinary bladder; in broader terms it tells about the whole urinary system. Dalchini Powder is a useful supplement for nourishment of kidneys and detoxification of body.
  • Arsha Jit: Arsha stands for the piles - painful, swollen veins in the lower portion of rectum or anus. As per Ayurveda; these result from disturbance in metabolism and digestive system. Cinnamon works on both of theses thus it is a recommended dietary supplement for piles.
  • Peenasa Kasjit: Dalchini Powder is useful in respiratory discomfort and running nose.

Research done on Dalchini Powder:

  • It is reported that regularly drinking of Cinnamomum zeylanicum tea made from the bark could be beneficial to oxidative stress related illness in humans, as the plant part contains significant antioxidant potential.

  • Recent research documents anti-cancer activity of cinnamaldehyde/cinnamic aldehyde observed in cell culture and animal models of the disease. Proliferation, invasion, and tumor growth were inhibited in a murine A375 model of human melanoma.

Adverse Reactions:

Cinnamon has been given Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) status by the FDA. 5 At dosages of up to 6 g/day, no significant adverse reactions have been reported.
