Shirodhara
This is the most famous procedure among all Panchakarma procedures, because this procedure was used at maximum in western part of the globe. Shirodhara is understood as pouring of some oil drop by drop, or in a stream on the forehead region, through some pot which hangs on something.

Shirodhara is made up of two words; as Ayurveda is; Shiras and Dhara are these two words in Shirodhara. Shiras means- Head and Dhara means a “stream”, a “flow” or to “pour out”. So Shirodhara means in simple words- to pour out something on the head region! We have brought two types of Shirodhara Pots for you:

How To Perform Shirodhara
Whole body massage of the patient should be done before the main procedure. Proper information about the procedure should be given to the patient and he should be suggested to be relaxed during the main procedure.

On an auspicious day in the morning the physician should call the patient, should light the lamp and after praying the Lord Dhanvantri, should ask the patient to sit on the table facing towards east.

    • The head of the patient should be irrigated with the oil, thrice carefully after wards the body below the neck should be massaged with lukewarm oil.
    • A thick cloth rope should be tied on the forehead of the patient near the eyebrows, so that oil or Dhara fluid won’t approach towards eyes of a patient.
    • Two gauze pieces should be kept on eyes of a patient, after dipping in the rose water and should be tied in a proper way (It should never be tight ) on the eyes of patient. Alone putting two gauze pieces is enough in most of the cases.
    • A small pillow should be kept below the head of the patient.
    • One attendant should hold the Dhara pot hanging over the head of the patient and should put his thumb over the hole of the Dhara Pot keeping it closed while the second attendant should pour the Dhara fluid into the Dhara Pot carefully.
    • Now the outlet of the Dhara Pot should be released slowly to thread piece.
    • One attendant should ausscilate the Dhara Pot to and fro in horizontal direction.
    • The Dhara Fluid should be collected in between the procedure and should be re-poured in the Dhara pot, after making it lukewarm.

This process should be carried out continuously for 45 to 90 minutes in the morning hours between 7 to 10 am for 14 to 21 days depending upon the underlying disease and the condition of the patient. Usually Shirodhara is not given more than 21 days at stretch. It is believed that by irrigation of the head the effect of medication percolates unto the length and the entire body by 21 days.

After completion of Shirodhara the head of the patient should be wiped off then the patient is advised warm medicated water bath.
